Aubrey Huff and Opening Day

Morning everyone, I am going to have a writeup/rundown later today; however, since I missed work yesterday afternoon, I am trying to get caught up again with society. Add to that I had a weekend full of baseball, both for pleasure and work -- I'm trying to readjust.

Anyhow, there's a lot to talk about, but if you were not at the Yard yesterday, things really have changed from past Opening Day events.

The crowd was lively, but the crowd on Monday didn't have the feel of year's past, and it was almost like we as fans have been resigned to failure.

If you get a chance, read Dick Heller's column in the Washington Times today. Yes, I try to be a positive as I can, and still love the Orioles; however, there's no doubt what the author is saying is the absolute truth -- things are not the same anymore, and the Baltimore Orioles need to win and ! also reach out to their fans if they have any hope of reliving the glory days of 90's at the Yard.

Aubrey Huff: I'd really like to feel sorry for guy; however, I really don't. I have heard a few more stories about how he treated a few fans during spring training, and I personally revile the guy and hope he leaves.

In today's post on Roch's blog, "Roch Around the Clock", and he goes into the fray about the beleagured first/third baseman-DH.

Aubrey Huff was given "the treatment" tonight by fans who haven't forgotten or forgiven his appearance on Bubba the Love Sponge's show back in November. I'm hoping the booing was an Opening Day thing and will go the way of the Dodo bird because it's going to get old real fast.

I can see letting Huff have it if he's insisting that everything he said about Baltimore is true and the r! esidents need to just get over it or he'll also stop hitting T! ampa Bay pitching this season. But he's admitted his mistake numerous times. He can't erase the past, or the tapes from the show. It was fair to tear into him months ago, but it's March 31 and the season's started and it's really time to move on.

The booing started to feel forced by the ninth inning, as if it mistakenly was still the cool thing to do. Meanwhile, Huff had a single, missed a long home run by a few feet and crushed a ball that first baseman Carlos Pena smothered with a lunging stop. In a game where quality at-bats were scarce, Huff had a few of them.
He gets the point. People are mad that he dissed the city and embarrassed himself and the organization with his conduct on the show – and we're not just talking about the Baltimore rippage. But it's done. Teammates are tired of it, though they had some fun at his expense earlier in the day because that's what guys do. We pile on. And then we jump off and defend our friends. I'm not suggesting that fans unfu! rl banners supporting Huff on Wednesday. But I don't see the need to make the jeering a nightly obsession. It's already gotten tired.

Maybe we can find another cause.

Sadly, you cannot legislate stupidity; however as I told someone yesterday Aubrey Huff disrespecting Baltimore with his comments in the off-season would not be easily forgotten by a town that has a long memory.

Case in point - people are still miffed at the Irasys for leaving Baltimore in the early 80's; honestly, do you think people would forget about Huff?

People have the right too boo or cheer for who they want to. Besides, Huff made his bed when he issued those comments, now he has to lie in it.

If I were Huff, I'd sign every autograph I could and reach out to the fans, if he were serious or even cares about his reputation.

The New York Mets Are Classless; Willie Randolph's Firing...

Well, after weeks of much speculation and ominous headlines in both the New York and National press, the fans of the New York Mets are probably happy with the news this morning -- made most likely before most even woke up on the East Coast.

At 3:15 a.m. ET -- that manager Willie Randolph had been fired along with Pitching coach Rick Peterson and first base coach Tom Nieto were also let go. Meanwhile, Jerry Manuel takes over -- for now.

How classless. If you were going to fire him -- why do it after he traveled c! ross country and boarded a plane. I guess Sunday being Father's Day delayed the inevitable.

From the AP: After weeks of speculation that his job was in jeopardy, Willie Randolph finally got fired by the New York Mets while most fans were sleeping.

The Mets had Willie Randolph manage the team Monday night in L.A. -- and fired him early Tuesday morning.

Randolph was let go in the middle of the night Tuesday, 2½ months into a disappointing season that has followed the team's colossal collapse last September.

Bench coach Jerry Manuel takes over on an interim basis for Randolph, who led the Mets to within one win of the 2006 World Series. They got off to a strong start again last year but plummeted down the stretch and have been unable to rebound.

A preseason favorite to win the NL pennant, the $138 million Mets (34-35) had won two in a row when Randolph was dismissed early! Tuesday morning -- making him the first big league manager to! get fir ed this season.

Pitching coach Rick Peterson and first base coach Tom Nieto also were cut loose in an enormous overhaul that was revealed in a fact-of-the-matter news release at a stunning time -- about 3:15 a.m. ET, nearly two hours after New York's 9-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Ken Oberkfell, the club's manager at Triple-A New Orleans, and Dan Warthen, pitching coach for the Zephyrs, will join the major league staff along with Luis Aguayo, a Mets field coordinator.
For a while I wondered if the Mets were looking to create like a mini-series or something with this whole saga with Willie Randolph.

I don't blame Willie for the Mets' woes; they've got a top-heavy team with aging players, injuries, and their players seem to have a problem coming through in the clutch.

It's simple - the Mets are mediocre and I think things are not going to change no matter how badly they wanted things shaken up.

Burnett To Opt Out...

While America is waiting to see if Barack Obama or John McCain will become our next president, one of the worst kept secrets in baseball will become life in a bit and it involves A.J. Burnett...
from ESPN.com: Right-hander A.J. Burnett will opt out of his multiyear contract with the Toronto Blue Jays and declare free agency, his agent said Tuesday.

Agent Darek Braunecker said he's filed the necessary paperwork with the players' association and that Burnett will be opting out of the final two years of his five-year, $55 million contract. Burnett had two years and $24 million left on the deal.

"It's just a formality," Braunecker said from the general managers' meetings in Dana Point, Calif. "We're going to continue dialogue with [the Blue Jays]. But this is the formal exercise that allows us to talk to other people on A.J.'s behalf."

Burnett, 31, posted an 18-10 record with a 4.07 ERA for! Toronto this season and established career highs with 34 starts and 221 1/3 innings pitched. He's expected to be seeking a four- or five-year deal for at least $16 million annually on the open market.
It looks like A.J. was good enough and also healthy at the right time to get the chance to make even more money -- however, I still think you have to take a cautious approach with this guy.

His numbers may look good -- but he's got a dubious record for injury and his career has been up and down. He might be a good fit for the Orioles -- however, at $16 million year?

No, for that money, I'll pass.

I'd Hate To Be A Lions Fan...

If you think the Orioles have it bad -- can you imagine what's going on in Detroit? The Lions became the first ever 0-16 history as they lost to the Green Bay Packers, 31-21. They fought, but in the end, they could not salvage a win.

Sports is a very important fabric of a community, and to see the Lion this bad -- especially considering what is going on with the Big Three auto companies, what's happened on the political scene up there, and the conditions of the city in general -- is nothing short of depressing.

I hope things get better in the Motor City sooner rather than ! later.

More on Wigginton

As most fans know, the team acquired the 'verstaile' Ty Wigginton off the market yesterday. There's not been an offiicial press release out on the signing (one can assume he has to finish a physical), but he'll be an Oriole.

Here's some more from Wigginton courtesy of the Baltimore Sun.

Wigginton, 31, agreed to a two-year, $6 million deal yesterday morning, which will become official this week once he completes a physical in Baltimore.

"I'm definitely excited," said Wigginton, who has played in parts of seven major league seasons with the New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates, Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Houston Astros.

"When I was in Tampa, I enjoyed playing in the AL East. I believe it is the toughest division in baseball. You have to compete on a daily basis in that division, and that's a lot of fun."

The Orioles Get The Best of Former Teammate, Daniel Cabrera...

The Baltimore Orioles today faced an old friend down in Fort Lauderdale today, and like the old cliches goes -- the more things change, the more they stay the same. In the end, the Orioles downed the Washington Nationals, 6-2, as they beat their former compadre and had a little fun with him too on the bases.

Cabrera -- a frustrating presence to Oriole fans over the years -- went two inning and gave up a run. He looked shaky on the mound as he walked two and struck out two; furthermore, the Orioles -- who may know him better than anyone else, perhaps better than himself -- stole four bases against him. Like it has been said over and over, Cabrera has the physical skills to pitch; however, he's not learned the g! ame at all, and it's now up to the Nationals to get him to be the pitcher that he can be.

Aubrey Huff Q&A, ESPN Zone: Write-up and Pictures

Yesterday afternoon, the ESPN Zone at the Inner Harbor in conjunction with the Baltimore Orioles held their second Q&A Session with first baseman Aubrey Huff. I've been going to these events for years, and I'll say the crowd at the popular restaurant was the biggest I've seen in long time -- save for Nick Markakis and Erik Bedard years back -- as every seat was practically filled and standing room only (barely).

The overflowing crowd and the candor of Aubrey Huff made the event memorable as he was pretty much direct and open about his life along with his humble beginnings, career, and yes, the infamous fist pump a few Sundays ago that involved Yankee fireballer Joba Chamberlain. After the Q&A, he signed autographs for the huge crowd in an auxiliary room in the restaurant.

Few See the O's Lose to Tampa; Red Sox Come To Town...

Well, it was a decent night to be out at the Yard and I had pretty much a front row seat to the action; however, there was really not that much to see. In perhaps one of the smallest crowds I have even seen at a baseball game in Baltimore -- there could not have been more than 7,000 people in the stands, tops -- the Orioles were shut out by the Rays, 3-0.

Tampa starting picher Wade David looked like an old pro as he struck ten, walked two and allowed only four hits. His teammates provided more than enough support on the evening as Carl Crawford had an RBI-single in the third inning, and they scored in the fourth off Gabe kapler sacrifice. Tampa added another run in the ninth off a Evan Longoria RBI-single.

Mark Hendrickson, in a spot start took the loss as he gave up two runs in 3 1/3 innings worked. The bullpen for Ba! ltimore was respectable as they only gave up a single run in 5 2/3 innings of work.

Flyers (43-25-11) at Rangers (41-30-9)

MSG - 7pm ET

This is it Rangers fans, one win in either of the next two games and the Rangers clinch a playoff spot. Why wait till Sunday? Let's get it done tonight on home ice and make Sunday's game mean nothing more than trying to pass Montreal for 7th in the East.

The Flyers have already ! clinched, but you know that they'll be doing their best to knock the Rangers out of playoff contention. Going into Philly on Easter Sunday needing a win won't be fun, so the Rangers need to come out firing on all cylinders tonight. Lundqvist needs to be at his best again and Chris Drury needs to be the captain that we saw on Tuesday against Montreal.

What to watch for:
The Rangers power play has been abysmal all season long. Meanwhile the Flyers lead the league with 16 short-handed goals (haven't given up a single SHG all season!) Remember that 3 on 5 short-handed goal that Mike Richards scored against the Rangers earlier this season? Yeah, it makes me cringe to! The Rangers power play needs to not only try and score tonight, they need to make sure that the Flyers' penalty killers don't.

The Dubinksy/Richards battle - everytime these two are on the ice together they try their best to throw the body around. T! hey've already had a few fights in their short careers against! each ot her, I don't expect that tonight, but both players always show their animousity towards each other.

Sean Avery - expect Avery to be Avery! At least that's what we hope for. He hasn't scored in 10 games but when the Rangers played the Flyers last and won 4-1, Avery scored two of those goals. I expect him to get back on the score sheet tonight.

Who on the Flyers to watch out for:
As I already said the Flyers Penalty Kill is extremely dangerous; especially Richards (7 SHGs), Gagne and Carter (each with 4 SHGs).

Jeff Carter is having a phenominal break out year - he has 44 goals (2nd in the league to Ovechkin) and has 80 points. Mike Richards also is having a very good season, with 30 goals and 78 points.

Marty Biron is a very hot & cold goalie (let's hope we see the cold Biron tonight).

Fights?
Hey - it's a Rangers/Flyers game so ! the chances of a fight are pretty damn good. But, with the Rangers concentrating on getting the win and Philly determined to finish ahead of the Penguins (who are just 2 points behind them), both teams may stay out of the box. In an intense game with serious playoff implications, anything is possible. Riley Cote, the Flyers tough guy is out for the season after injuring his finger in a fight, so Colton Orr probably won't find a dance partner tonight.

As mentioned before Dubinsky & Richards is always a possibility - getting Richards off the ice for 5 minutes is definitely something that would favor the Rangers.

With Sean Avery buzzing around the ice, you never know when things could get out of control. You know that Richards and him have a history and trade deadline Daniel Carcillo is another guy willing to drop the gloves.

Prediction:
I'm going to go with the same prediction that I had Tuesda! y against Montreal, the Rangers with a 4-2 win.

Break Down of the Voting

Grabbed this from Kukla's Korner this morning. Interesting to see the break down of the voting to see how close the voting "races" actually were. The tightest race was the voting for the Selke Trophy, in which Pavel Datsyuk received 945 points compared to Mike Richards' 942, Richards actually had more first place votes than Datsyuk. Some expected the Hart Trophy to be a tight race, it wasn't - Ovechkin ran away with it getting 115 of the first place votes, compared to Malkin's 12 first place votes.

Below is a break down for each trophy that was voted on at the NHL Awards:

Hasil Pertandingan | Liga Inggris 2009/2010 | Tottenham vs MU 1 - 3

MU

Kartu merah pun langsung diberikan untuknya.

Kualifikasi Piala Dunia 2009/2010 | Rooney Berharap Portugal Tak Lolos

Portugal

Lalu, apa alasan Rooney mengharapkan mereka tak lolos?

Vieri May Join Spurs

By Jaymes Payten-Marsh
For THBN

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is in talks with Christian Vieri's representatives after the cult Italian striker had his contract cancelled by Inter.

Talks have been ongoing since the morning, but as yet, Spurs are keeping tight-lipped about the whole affair.

It was apparently Frank Arnesen who tipped off Levy about Vieri becoming a free agent. Arnesen is still under contract at Tottenham, but has been relieved of his duties.

Vieri speaks fluent English as he was raised in Australia. If Spurs can land Vieri, it will surely prove that they are ambitious as ever.

Norwich 1 - 5 Spurs

Darren Bent scores his fourth goal by slotting the ball through the keepers legs. Finally, we are really seeing what Darren Bent can do. The entire side has been built around his strengths in the second half, with the midfield playing just off him.

This 4-1-4-1 formation is suiting Bent right down to a tee!

Reserves to play against United on the weekend

After our lucky entry into the League Cup Final against Manchester United, Redknapp said that he will field a "mish-mash" side against United in our F.A. Cup draw this weekend.

At least he's honest with us. But goodness me, what the hell is wrong with our players?

Felipe Melo, Suksesor Ideal Pirlo

Milan Tawar Adebayor Besar-Besaran

Agen Pesimis Luis Fabiano Pindah Ke Milan

Milan Bergegas Buru Fabregas

MILAN - AC Milan kembali melakukan perburuan sejumlah pemain. Gelandang Arsenal, Cesc Fabregas, masih menjadi target utama "I Rossoneri".

Pendapat Leonardo Tentang Ronaldinho & Beckham

Benar-benar persahabatan sejati."

Ribery: Milan Juga Kehilangan "Zidane"

Galliani: Saya Tak Bisa Jual Pemain Tua

Rafa won't risk Agger

Agger is close to returning to action after undergoing a minor back operation last month.

The Dane has yet to feature this season due to the problem, but Benitez believes the classy central defender could be back in action next week.

Liverpool's injury problems are easing with Fabio Aurelio making his first appearance of the campaign as a late substitute against Debrecen in midweek and other long-term absentee Alberto Aquilani set to start training in the next few weeks.

"Aurelio is now ready for a comeback, Mascherano is also over his problem while Danny Agger is very close to a return and (Alberto) Aquilani is also getting close to being involved in full training," said Benitez.

"When the majority of our squad are fit, we can manage games with more confidence.

"Agger is a risk, he could play now, but he has been out for a long time and we have to be careful with him. But I believe that next week he could be available."!

Come?

MAICON DIVENTA BOMBER E L'INTER VINCE A SIENA

Aspettiamo".

E chissà che "Sognando Beckham" possa pres! to trasformarsi in realtà...

Cup!

Berlusconis Fininvest Denies Report of Plan to Sell AC Milan

Babel, 22, admits he would consider joining his old club Ajax if it improves his hopes of inclusion in Holland's squad for South Africa.

Babel, who has been dropped since playing in Liverpool's defeat by Tottenham, said: 'There have been a lot of things promised, but they haven't been followed up.
'Now we h! ave agreed to review the situation in January.
'I think half a season at Ajax with a view to the World Cup wouldn't be a bad idea.'

Home-grown rule introduced

From the 2010/11 campaign, the 20 Premier League clubs have voted to introduce measures which will see all teams required to have eight home-grown players out of a squad of 25.

Chief executive Richard Scudamore confirmed the changes, with clubs only able to make alterations to their squads during the two transfer windows.

"As of next season clubs will be required to have a squad named of up to 25 players, of which no more than 17 can be over the age of 21 and not home grown," Scudamore said.

"The definition of home grown is trained for three years under the age of 21 by somebody in the English and Welsh professional system.

"Clubs will have to declare their 25 at the end of August when the window shuts and then again at the end of January."

Players who are aged under 21 are eligible over and above the limit of 25 players per squad.

Incentive
Scudamore does not believe the move will encourage clubs to hoar! d young foreign players and claims the England team will ultimately reap the reward.

"It's not in the club's interests to stockpile players. It will make buying home-grown talent more attractive," he said.

"We're not going down the route of a nationality test but what this will mean is that you just can't buy a team from abroad.

"We think it will give clubs an extra incentive to invest in youth. We think that one of the benefits will be that it will help the England team."

All 20 Premier League members also agreed to adhere to a set of financial reporting rules designed to protect the viability and sustainability of the clubs.

Finances
"They will all have to annually submit accounts and future financial information," said Scudamore.

"At all times the board of the Premier League will be applying a test which basically says this: can the club fulfil its fixtures, pay off its creditors when they are d! ue and also to meet obligations to the Premier League's contra! cts and partners?

"If the board believe a club is at risk of not meeting those obligations, it has to then step in and agree a budget for the running of that club. Any transfers can be embargoed.

"It's absolutely crucial that these clubs are run as ongoing viable concerns. These financial rules apply immediately.

"This is tied in, and we passed the rule during the summer, to a 'fit and proper person test'. At our club meeting last week, the clubs absolutely endorsed our position of not linking expenditure to income."

Semenya to keep World gold medal

Caster Semenya
Semenya was in the form of her life in Berlin in August

Caster Semenya will not be stripped of her World Championships 800m gold medal whatever the outcome of her gender t! est results, BBC Sport understands.

The testing process is unlikely to be concluded for two weeks but the IAAF - the governing body of world athletics - says Semenya can keep her medal.

The 18-year-old South African was asked to take the test following her rapid rise to prominence in 2009.

News of it was made public hours before she took gold in Berlin in August.

Despite the leak, the teenager left her rivals trailing to win in a time of one minute, 55.45 seconds.

Defending champion Janeth Jepkosgei of Kenya was second, a massive 2.45 seconds adrift, with Britain's Jenny Meadows taking bronze.

The International Association of Athletics Federations says it demanded Semenya take a gender test before the World! Championships amid fears she should not be able to run as a w! oman.

Following the findings of initial tests, the IAAF then asked the South Africans to withdraw her from their team for Germany.

However, the South African athletics federation insisted she should run and says it is certain! she is female, a claim backed up by her family.

Now, given that she was ultimately allowed to compete, IAAF spokesman Nick Davies said it would be "legally very difficult" to ask Semenya to hand back her medal.

Semenya burst on to the world stage when she ran 1.56.72 in Bambous, Mauritius, in July, smashing her previous personal best by more than seven seconds.

She also broke Zola Budd's long-standing South African record and arrived in Berlin as the newly crowned African junior champion.
